Classified ads that create value for your members

Give members a place to post jobs, sell equipment, and share opportunities -- with built-in moderation, optional payments, and automatic expiration.

A classifieds board that manages itself

A trusted marketplace for your community. A classified ads board is one of the most practical member benefits an association can offer. It gives members a trusted marketplace to post job openings, sell equipment, advertise services, or share professional opportunities -- all within a community they already belong to. For the association, it drives engagement, creates a potential revenue stream, and reinforces the value of membership.

A guided six-step submission wizard. Upside AMS includes a classified ads system that handles the full submission lifecycle through a guided six-step wizard. Members move from Start through Details, Review, Billing, Checkout, and finally Submitted -- with each step clearly labeled so they always know where they are in the process. Rich text descriptions and PDF file attachments let members create detailed, professional listings.

Configurable categories with auto-expiration. Categories are fully configurable to match your association's needs. Whether you want to offer job postings, equipment sales, office space listings, or volunteer opportunities, you define the categories and members select the right one when creating their ad. Each listing includes date-based publishing with automatic expiration, so your classifieds board stays current without anyone having to manually remove stale listings.

Optional moderation and built-in payments. For associations that want editorial control, optional admin approval ensures every ad is reviewed before it goes live. For those that prefer a lighter touch, ads can publish immediately upon submission. And if classifieds are a revenue source, the built-in billing and checkout steps handle payment seamlessly as part of the submission flow.

Key capabilities

  • Guided submission wizard -- a six-step process (Start, Details, Review, Billing, Checkout, Submitted) walks members through creating a complete, well-formatted ad.
  • Configurable categories -- define ad categories (jobs, equipment, services, and more) to organize listings in a way that makes sense for your members.
  • Optional payment and checkout -- charge for ad placements with integrated billing, or offer free listings by disabling the payment step.
  • Admin approval workflow -- optionally require staff review before ads go live, giving you full control over published content.
  • Automatic expiration -- ads are published for a configurable duration (up to three months by default) and removed automatically when they expire.
  • Rich content support -- members can write detailed descriptions with rich text formatting and attach PDF files to their listings.
  • Direct admin creation -- staff can create ads directly from the admin dashboard, bypassing the approval process for association-posted content.

How it works for members

Post an ad in just a few minutes. Posting an ad takes just a few minutes. Members start from their portal, select a category, and follow the guided wizard. The Details step lets them write a rich text description, set a title, and attach any supporting PDF documents. The Review step shows a preview of the listing so they can check everything before proceeding.

Pay inline and track ad status. If your association charges for listings, the Billing and Checkout steps handle payment inline -- no separate invoicing or follow-up required. Once submitted, members receive confirmation and can track the status of their ad from their portal. If admin approval is enabled, they will see their ad move from pending to published once staff signs off.

Expired ads clean up automatically. Published ads are visible to the association community with clear details, formatting, and any attached documents. When an ad reaches its expiration date, it is automatically removed -- keeping the board fresh and relevant.

How it works for staff

Configure categories, pricing, and moderation. Administrators configure the classifieds system through the admin dashboard: defining categories, setting the maximum publication duration, enabling or disabling payment requirements, and choosing whether ads need approval before publishing. These settings shape the experience without requiring any custom development.

Review queue with full editorial control. When admin approval is enabled, submitted ads appear in a review queue. Staff can approve, reject, or request changes before an ad goes live. This gives your association full editorial control while keeping the process efficient. Ads created directly by staff through the admin dashboard are auto-approved, making it easy to post association announcements or featured listings.

Minimal effort to keep the board current. Expired ads are handled automatically, but staff can also manually unpublish or extend listings when needed. The result is a classifieds board that stays current and professional with minimal ongoing effort.

Frequently asked questions

Can I charge for posting classified ads? +
Yes. The classified ads system includes an optional billing and checkout step. You can set pricing per ad or per category, and members complete payment as part of the submission wizard. If you prefer to offer free listings, simply disable the payment step and ads go straight from review to submission.
How does moderation work? +
You can enable optional admin approval so that submitted ads are reviewed by staff before they go live. This gives you full editorial control over what appears on your site. Alternatively, you can allow ads to publish immediately upon submission. Administrators can also create ads directly through the admin dashboard, which are auto-approved and published right away.
How long do classified ads stay published? +
Each ad has a configurable publication duration with automatic expiration. The default maximum is three months, but you can adjust this to suit your needs. When an ad reaches its end date, it is automatically removed from public view -- no manual cleanup required.
Can members edit ads after submission? +
Members can manage their ads through their member portal. The level of editing available depends on your moderation settings -- if admin approval is enabled, significant changes may require re-approval to maintain quality control. This ensures that published ads always meet your association's standards.
